Custer County Historical Society (CCHS)
Program Speakers

Schedule for 2017

 

First Saturday of the following months: 

 January through June and October through November

 

Location:  Pine Room (adjacent to the County Library)

 

Time: Approximately 2:35pm, after the CCHS Membership Meeting (2:00pm) and coffee/light refreshments (2:20pm)

 

Admission:  FREE

January 7:  Paul Horsted, Custer photographer and author, will present photographic information on  the recently renamed Black Elk Peak and the determination of the actual elevation of South Dakota’s highest mountain.
 
February 4:  Sam Hurst, retired NBC journalist, presents
a program based on his newest book “Rattlesnake Under His Hat”, a biography of Earl Brockelsby, founder of Reptile Gardens.
 
March 4:  Cindy Reed of Cascade, SD (south of Hot Springs)
presents the history of Claude Barr, Fall River County Rancher who became an expert on flowers and gardening in the Black Hills.
 
April 1:  Dr. Arley Fadness, local Custer area author and minister, will feature the life story of outlaw Cole Younger and his experience in the Black Hills.
 
May 6:  Tom Tesnow, Director of the Fort Meade Museum near Sturgis, will present a program on the colorful characters who were affiliated with Fort Meade, Dakota Territory.
 
June 3:  Keith Johnson of Rapid City, leader of Custer’s Trail Riders, will present a program featuring Gen. G.A. Custer’s travels through the Black Hills and the experience of the group that re-ride that trail annually.
 
October 7:  Katie Logue Smith of Oelrichs will tell about her family history, giving an accurate picture of early pioneer life on the prairie.
 
November 4:  June Stender will share her research and aerial photos of Peleliu Island in the South Pacific during World War Two.  She will take the audience on a ‘walk through’ of how many American soldiers were killed there.
